  • Essay / Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - 946

How do you classify whether someone is human or not? A tricky question has many possible answers, but only a few could be justified as human. Kazuo Ishiguro addressed this topic in his book Never Let Me Go. A recurring question throughout the novel is whether or not these clones are considered a human being or just another science project. In the novel, suspicious individuals from the surrounding communities believed that the students were not human because they could not reproduce, that they had no parents, and that what the students were experiencing was morally unacceptable. In my opinion, Ishiguro shows that the clones are indeed human, due to their artwork, which proves that they have creativity, that they show emotions, and that the clones can do human things. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is a novel told from the point of view of a student, Kathy H, who attends this boarding school in Hailsham, England in the 1990s. She tells her story, how she grew up and how she got to where she is today. The students were raised at Halisham until they were old enough to donate their vital organs. This raised speculation in the community about whether or not they were human, since they were actually a replica of someone else's DNA. The main goal of Madame and the other guardians of Halisham was to prove that they were indeed humans and to protect the students. However, the community did not accept the fact that they could be human, ultimately leading to the school's closure years later. Humans are a unique set of species with many defining characteristics. When asked what makes you human, the majority of people would say being able to breathe, speak, bleed and reproduce... middle of paper ...... have sex, but at As they grow older, the idea of sex becomes more mature. Their ability to desire sex, grow and become more mature proves that clones are like humans. As Ruth said, sometimes she feels like she “does it.” Humans have this feeling and desire to have sex, which proves their humanity. Some who object to the idea that clones are human because they have a desire to have sex would argue that they are not human because they cannot reproduce. Yes, in this situation the clones can't reproduce, but there are also humans in the real world who can't reproduce, so they rely on other methods like adoption. Humans who cannot reproduce still desire sex, like the clones in the novel who desire sex but cannot reproduce. This idea and the fact that there are real humans who can relate helps prove their humanity and not deny it as some might think..
