This review primarily evaluates areas of literature regarding the themes of media gender representations and the research approaches that have been adopted in this area. Many literary discoveries formed around these topics have covered television series as well as other media formats, but few studies have looked at a collection of television series referencing the same writer to analyze the comparison and contrast of representation . With gender identity research, much is constructed through discourse representation. More importantly, femininity is a strong dominance ideology that suggests “appropriate” behavior for women (Goffman, 1976; Macdonald, 1995). Due to the gradual revolution in the role and position of women in society since the 19th century, scholars have developed more powerful movements redefining what it means to be a woman. (Hooks, 1990; Friedan, 1963). There are many arguments surrounding the question of how women are and should be represented in the media. The relevant literature in this study concerns the arguments raised regarding the characteristics of a black woman in the 21st century and represented in the media. Feminism and feminist media studies have attempted to create white women as a privileged gender as women above other feminist categories – racial in particular (Hooks, 1990; Dines, 1995 and Humez, 2003, Setts, Pratt-Hyatt).
