  • Essay / Periods and Movements Essay - 1073

Periods and movements over time have changed enormously and each period has helped create a different movement in society. The colonial period sparked a movement around religious views and equality. The revolutionary period brought about a movement toward freedom and the ability to not depend on one another. The period of romanticism and transcendentalism caused a movement with emotions and ideas about the nature of the world. The period of realism caused a movement with unrealistic ideas; getting people to see a bigger picture that wasn't always happy. The period of modernism brought about a movement with a personal connection and emotional ideas to the world. There is always a way to make a difference and literature is not always the only way to have an impact on the world. The Colonial period, containing the Puritan Plain style of writing, was a movement that was used by most New Englanders on equality and religion. The way the words were written struck people in a religious way, which caused them to view their religious views differently; it makes people think about their religion and their life after death. In the poem Huswifery by Edward Taylor, he compares God to a spinning wheel. It was written differently than people were used to; yet, it had an impact on people. Some writings, like Simmers in the Hands of an Angry Man by Jonathan Edwards, inspired people to fear God, but in a good way. People were so afraid that they did not want to die without God, which helped create bonds between people. It's possible that the only reason people have reconsidered their religious views is the emphasis on equality. An account of Mary Rowlandson's captivity demonstrates the fact that all people are equal, even with different skin tones or languages...... middle of paper ......, The Sandlot, it is “there are heroes and there are legends.” Heroes are remembered but legends never die. » Over time, different movements have changed and in each period, a new movement has been created. Equality and religion helped spark a movement during the colonial period. Being free and independent helped spark a movement during the revolutionary period. Emotions and ideas about nature helped spark a movement during the period of Romanticism and Transcendentalism. Unrealistic ideas and sad ideas that caused people to have a broader view of life helped spark a movement during the Realism period. Personal connections and ideas of emotions with the world helped spark a movement during the period of modernism. Literature isn't the only way to leave a mark on the world, but books are a great starting point for making history..
