  • Essay / Counterbalancing the ugliness of the Industrial Revolution

There are positive and negative sides to every event and the Industrial Revolution is no exception. There were many improvements accompanied by drawbacks during industrialization. During the Industrial Revolution, new scientific directions were taken, new lifestyles were pioneered, and new technologies were invented. The positive results of industrialization have outweighed the suffering it has caused to people and the environment. As science took a new direction, people became healthier with the introduction of vaccines, pasteurization, anesthesia, antiseptics, and the importance of personal hygiene. Thanks to scientific advancements, scientists have been able to study deadly diseases more closely. After the introduction of germ theory, Louis Pasteur developed vaccines to combat rabies and anthrax and introduced pasteurization to kill disease-carrying microbes in milk. The discovery of vaccines has allowed people to become immune to deadly diseases that exist around the world. Florence Nightingale introduced the necessary sanitary measures that every hospital must take and Joseph Lister discovered the antiseptics that must be used to sterilize instruments before being used to operate surgical practices. After these introductions of health measures in hospitals, the rate of patients dying from infection a few days after the operation decreased. People were able to live longer and survive more illnesses, leading to an increase in population and the number of workers. As cities began to industrialize, farmers flocked to cities to find employment opportunities. These farmers became factory workers or miners who faced harsh conditions as they were crowded into buildings without running water, sewage, or drinking water. In addition to their harsh living conditions, the factories...... middle of paper ......tion, the machines were powered by steam engines which released a large amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The widespread use of steam locomotives and railways only intensified air pollution. But without these farms, the world would never be what it is today. Without developments such as the steam engine, countries would not be able to develop machines that increased productivity and lowered the prices of goods. The positive results of the Industrial Revolution were worth the negative consequences it brought to Earth, because cities would not do it. The country would not be able to develop and half the population would continue to farm and use the outgrower system to make clothes and goods. The Industrial Revolution ushered civilizations into a new era where travel became easier and faster, cities became cleaner and safer, and goods became cheaper and more accessible..
