    Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men are classic literary novels that depict major topics such as early life in the South , racial injustice and the importance of innocence and compassion. Unique and best-selling authors Steinbeck and Lee both share common characteristics in their most famous and recognized books. The setting, major themes and symbols personifying innocence are literary similarities between the two stories. Although Of Mice and Men is set in California, it's in the southern part of the state. To Kill a Mockingbird occurs in the South, specifically in Georgia, in Maycomb County. These two authors focus their novels on the 1930s and also on “the difficulties of life during the Great Depression” (Attell, 1998). Race is a major theme in both novels, as exemplified by the characters Tom Robinson and Crooks. Both authors use their characters and put them in situations that symbolize undervalued and segregated people. Crooks works on the farm, but he is isolated in a separate location....
