    From civil rights to the current birthright conflict, the struggle for women's rights has not only intensified, but also revealed itself in the struggle against new areas of inequality. Sociologists like Talcott Parsons and Betty Friedan discuss interesting theories about the gendered role of women in American families. They both provide contrasting arguments on the foundations and maintenance of the suppression of women. Talcott Parsons in his work “Sexuality Within the American Kingship” would explain the inequality existing between men and women within American households. He would argue that the role of women within these families would be secondary to the husband due to the fact that the social order of society maintained that a family was defined by the profession and status of the father. Although unfair, he believed that women's subordinate position served a social function. On the other hand, Betty Friedan, in her book "The Feminine Mystique: The Problem with No Name", explained the trials women faced in rejecting the ideas of first wave feminism and conforming to the preconceived ideas....
