    At the end of the Romantic period, everything changes. Art began to move towards different "isms" and music became an era that many refer to as "modern." A movement born in the 20th century, modern classical music has taken a turn that has surprised many. After a look at the history, music and composers of the modern music period, we can understand it better. Similar to the path taken by modern art, contemporary classical music has moved away from tradition. Composers felt the need to express themselves in subjective forms. They began trying new techniques and charting their own course. Leaders of this era included famous men such as Gustav Mahler and Jean Sibelius. The authors took inspiration from different styles of music and began experimenting with different instruments to create unique sounds. Different musical styles emerged from this era, including neoclassicism and impressionism. Enraged by this new approach to music, the public reacted with riots.
