Effects of non-traditional curriculum on its students To succeed in today's world, a person must have multifaceted knowledge. Therefore, to develop this knowledge in students, many schools have an educational system consisting of non-traditional subjects. According to the people who implement this program, it will produce a person well suited to today's world. It also helps students succeed not only in the classroom but also in the real world. But the program with non-traditional subjects has several effects. In his passage “An Army of One: Me,” Jean Twenge discusses the self-esteem curriculum. Although the authorities who implement these self-esteem programs promise that it will improve the future of the students, it actually makes the future of the student worse. In “An Army of One: Me,” Twenge explains how schools conduct themselves. self-esteem programs and what kinds of effects these programs have on children. Twenge states, “Many school districts across the country have specific programs designed to increase children's self-esteem, most of which actually build self-esteem and narcissism” (765). In the same sentence, she begins to describe the self-esteem program in schools and assumes that it is happening in a way that is not intended. If we build a building without using the plan we have already drawn, it will be a crooked building. In the same way, the self-esteem program is planned and designed to increase the self-esteem of school children, but when implemented, it results in an outcome that is directly opposite to the intended outcome. Twenge defines narcissism this way: “Narcissism is one of the few personality traits that psychologists agree is almost entirely negative” (774). Thus, narcissus...... middle of paper ......to a real world. Because the real world is not a bed of roses, we sometimes have to face failures. But self-esteem programs try to make students feel that there will be no failures, which is not true. If we cannot see the planet Saturn with the naked eye, it does not mean that Saturn does not exist. Likewise, it doesn't mean that students won't fail at anything because they went through a system that won't make them fail. This self-esteem program also covers up the failure of students and promotes them to the next level. But at some point, it will be difficult for these students to keep up with others. Therefore, this self-esteem program should be revised in a way that enhances the future of students instead of diminishing it. If we choose and implement the program correctly, it will undoubtedly guarantee a prosperous future for the younger generation..
