  • Essay / Ithaca - 1571

Poetry is a great way to express how someone feels. Great poets write poems about events and situations they could never have imagined (Epstein 4). “Cavafy's success was, in a way, to write outside of time by anchoring his writing as firmly as possible in time” (Epstein 4). In 1911, Cavafy produced “Ithaca,” which was one of his best poems, at the age of forty-eight (Epstein 3). This poem really captivates the reader's mind and makes them think about life. This poem reflects real situations that many people will face or have faced. CP Cavafy was a Greek poet who lived in the ancient city of Alexandria. He was the youngest of nine children (Epstein 1). “Cavafy lived in England from the age of 9 to 16. The bankruptcy of the family business brought him back to Alexandria, where he worked as a journalist and then as a civil servant in the Egyptian Ministry of Public Works” (Timpane 1). Cavafy was raised with a French tutor and an English nurse at home (Epstein 2). “A skeptic, he denied or ridiculed the traditional values of Christianity, patriotism, and heterosexuality, even as he was uncomfortable with his own nonconformism” (Cavafy11). Cavafy has been extremely discreet about his personal life. After the death of his mother, he became more open (Timpane 2). Cavafy died at age seventy from laryngeal cancer. He did not have a complete edition of his poems nor did he leave instructions for any one (Epstein 2). “Constantin Cavafy became one of the most important figures not only in Greek poetry but also in Western poetry. Cavafy was his own harshest critic, publishing only about 200 poems” (Cavafy1 1). "Cavafy had a splendid instinct for capturing the perfect historical detail that demonstrated continuity...... middle of paper ...... great wisdom that you have acquired, with so much experience/surely you must have understood then what Ithaca means” (34-36). The moral is not to be crazy when you reach the end; This is just the beginning of his new life. People learn so much when traveling, and "Ithaca" does what it's supposed to do: guide each person through life and help them achieve more and experience the greatest life adventure possible. The poem reflects how his mother helped him through everything. he did it. In the final stanzas, Cavafy tells how he gained wisdom and experience. His mother played a very important role in his life and that is how he gained this experience and wisdom. Once she died, her poetry became more open. CP Cavafy is truly one of the best poets who can captivate a reader's mind and take them on the best adventure imaginable..
