  • Essay / Considering all facets of the prostitution issue

The issue of prostitution has long been a controversial issue. With the increasing objectification of women's bodies, as well as the buying and selling of sexuality as a commodity, it becomes "even more urgent to understand the commodification of sex in the range and diversity of forms that sex takes." prostitution, and to analyze the commodification of sex”. the importance and impact of these developments on the status of women” (Barry 1994). Counterarguments to this claim that prostitution is “a practice of resistance by women to sexual liberation from traditional norms and moral principles of sexuality that have served to control and subordinate women (Jeffreys 2009). » Thus, prostitution is seen as a form of liberation rather than a form of oppression. However, feminists argue that prostitution sexually oppresses women because it consistently enforces patriarchal definitions of women as "having the primary function of serving men sexually (Bell 1987; Barry 1994)." We must therefore recognize that there are two sides to every coin, and the issue of prostitution will therefore be treated as such. This essay aims to consider all facets of the issue of prostitution – the conundrum of whether it should be a woman's choice will be analyzed in depth through the different views of feminists regarding prostitution, the sexual construction of men and women, the choice and action of women in prostitution, and the economic aspects of prostitution. First, the impacts of considering prostitution as a women's choice will be taken into account. This argument states that prostitution must be considered as an autonomous activity of women. This argument is further perpetuated by "prostitutes and prostitutes' rights" which "vigorously affirms the possibility of women's agency in prostitution...... middle of paper...... the system current discrimination of a group of human beings. for the benefit of another group of human beings, namely: men in preference to women. In a nutshell, prostitution violates the basic human right to physical and moral integrity by alienating women's sexuality which is transformed into something to be bought and sold. Prostitution cannot be said to reflect women's right to choose – as highlighted above, it simply gives society the illusion of free choice. In reality, women who engage in prostitution are forced to resort to it due to certain socio-economic circumstances. The very crux of prostitution serves to objectify and dehumanize women, because men are given authority over what women can and cannot do, and therefore simply serves to preserve the most stereotypical gender roles in which men are seen as dominant and women as submissive.
