Hildegard Peplau Theory of interpersonal relations. Hildegard E. Peplau is renowned in the nursing profession and other health care disciplines and her name is synonymous with interpersonal relationships in nursing. Her conceptualization and description of the process of nurse-patient interaction constitutes one of her major contributions. Hildegard was born on September 1, 1909 in Reading to immigrant parents of German origin. She grew up in a paternalistic family and society. She entered the nursing profession in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where she earned a nursing degree. Nursing education in his time was characterized by a nightingale era that was autonomous and controlled by nurses and schools were controlled by hospitals. Women nurses were seen as a source of cheap or free labor. Fresh out of college, she worked in operating room supervision, then moved to New York, where she specialized in surgical nursing. She later joined Vermont College where she managed the nursing staff and earned her bachelor's degree in psychology. Peplau's journey to becoming a foundational nursing theorist is based on her experiential learning (Grayce, 1998). Peplau describes his journey in four transformative experiences. The first concerns the eleven years (1932-1943); she was a summer camp nurse at the New York University summer camp for women majoring in physical education. During these years, she interacted with talented academicians from major colleges and universities such as Vassar and Wiliam. During these years, she rubbed shoulders with a group of illustrious women who welcomed her as a professional. The second step in her professional development occurred while she was a nurse and student at Bennington College. The glue...... middle of paper ......tributions.
